What exactly is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical art, aimed at maintaining a proper balance in the body’s functions. Illness is caused by an imbalance of Yin and Yang, the positive and negative forces of expansion and contraction. By inserting fine needles into acupuncture points, where the life-energy (Chi) flows, balance is restored and illness resisted.

Western minds have difficulty in accepting this concept. However, the effectiveness of acupuncture is well documented. Nor is this ‘all in the mind’ - treatment can work very well with animals, who have no preconceived notions! Research has demonstrated the effects of acupuncture on the production of neurotransmitters, including endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.

Will acupuncture help me?

The same condition in two different people may not behave consistently, so it is difficult to be specific. However, acupuncture can be very helpful in the relief of pain, particularly that caused by musculoskeletal conditions. Some other conditions also respond favourably, such as hay fever and other allergies, irritable bowel and stress.

Is it safe?

Reputable practitioners always use sterile, single use needles, so infection risk is negligible. The needles are very fine and sharp, so insertion is almost painless. Mishaps are very rare indeed. Always use a reputable practitioner, because of possible underlying conditions.
